We would like to offer our heartfelt congratulations to Dr Mukesh Haikerwal on being named the Hobsons Bay City Council‘s Citizen of the Year!

Dr Haikerwal was recognised for his invaluable and unwavering commitment to the health and wellbeing of the Hobsons Bay community, throughout the pandemic and beyond. He was also recognised for his outstanding leadership, dedication to his staff and patients, and his role in establishing the first GP-led Respiratory Clinic in Victoria.

“To be recognised by my own home community is a very deep and tear-watering experience as this is where I have lived with my family for 30 years and where we have been nurtured and supported through our working lives and raised our beautiful families,” he said.

From the very beginning, he put the safety of staff and patients before all else, and was a major driver in the supply of PPE to GP clinics when the state and National Medical Stockpile supplies were lacking.

From the first swab in our rear car park, to our brand-new dedicated interior Respiratory Clinic, we have seen over 13,000 patients that may not have otherwise been treated due to Covid-19 restrictions.

“To think that some of what we have provided for our community has impacted people and their lives and their health is a high honour indeed.”

Alongside Dr Haikerwal, Melissa Sheedy of the Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre was named Hobsons Bay Council’s Young Citizen of the Year. We wish both Melissa and Mukesh all the best for the year to come, and look forward to seeing what 2021 brings.
